Holderness NHLakes region community Holderness NHHolderness, New Hampshire was named in 1751 for Robert Darcy, fourth Earl of Holderness, ambassador to Venice and minister at The Hague under King George III. He opposed the king’s policy toward the colonies and became a close friend of Governor Wentworth in efforts to promote friendly trade relations abroad. In 1761, the land was regranted to a group of New England families, including Samuel Livermore, who wanted to create a pretentious estate similar to that of the English countryside.

Holderness, New Hampshire is situated on US Route 3 between Squam Lake and Little Squam Lake. The New Hampshire Science Center (formerly Squam Lakes Science Center) is located here. Holderness is also the name of a small private High School that is located in the area. The Holderness School is a private, co-educational boarding school located on Chapel Lane in nearby Plymouth, NH. Holderness was the location of the 1981 filming of the popular movie “On Golden Pond” with Henry Fonda, Jane Fonda, and Katharine Hepburn. The Hollywood movie crews are gone, but the loons can still be heard on Squam Lake – in this beautiful region of New Hampshire.
