The last town to be granted under the English provincial government, Whitefield was granted on July 4, 1774, exactly two years before adoption of the Declaration of Independence. It was named for George Whitefield, a famous English evangelist, and friend of the Earl of Dartmouth. Early grantees included Jeremy Belknap, historian, and John Langdon, who succeeded John Wentworth as governor. Today, Whitefield is a popular destination resort town, the Weathervane Theatre, Lion and the Rose Bed and Breakfast Inn, Northern Nights Inn (formerly Dun Roamin' Inn) , Whitefield Inn, and recently restored Inn at Mountain View Grand are located here.
Forest Lake, Mirror Lake, Burns Pond are located in Whitefield. Weeks State Park is on the north end of town heading toward Lancaster, NH on US Route 3.
