First chartered in 1769, this town was named for William Petty Fitzmaurice, Earl of Shelburne. Lord Shelburne was a supporter of independence for the American colonies, and at his insistence, the king recognized the independence of the United States. Remaining unsettled for quite some time after the charter was made, the town was incorporated in 1821 when Shelburne voters chose to keep the name.
Today, Sheldburne is known for spectacular scenery and beauty. The Shelburne Birches located on US Route 2 is popular with artists and photographers. The Old Man in the Valley Rock, a short walk off Route 2 near the Maine State line is a popular visiting spot. The rock face may have been carved by nature, though some insist the carving was done the native Americans.
