For many years prior to its 1782 incorporation, this town was an unnamed parish of Chichester. Like Pittsburg in the far north, Pittsfield was named for William Pitt, Prime Minister of England, and a great friend of the Colonies prior to the American Revolution. The town was settled by several families originally from Hampton New Hampshire. Pittsfield is a fine example of rural and industrial living in the Granite State. The town is situated along the banks of the Suncook River.
