WIldcat Mountain Joins Attitash as part of Peak Resorts - see the press release below. Thursday, October 21, 2010
Wildwood, MO Peak Resorts announced today that it has entered in to a purchase agreement with Pat Franchi to acquire all Wildcat Mountain Ski Area assets and attractions in Pinkham Notch, New Hampshire. Parties involved expect to finalize the purchase pending approval by the U.S. Forest Service. Adding to its portfolio of resorts located in six U.S. states, including Attitash and Crotched Mountain in New Hampshire and Mount Snow in Vermont, Wildcat Mountain becomes the 12th ski resort currently owned and operated by Peak Resorts.
“Wildcat Mountain is a legendary ski resort known to many in the industry and it has a lot of history,” said Peak Resorts CEO Tim Boyd. “I am pleased to add Wildcat Mountain to Peak Resorts because it offers a unique, year-round experience in a one-of-a-kind location and there are opportunities for growth and imp rovement over the long-term that we can consider and are familiar with delivering at all of our resorts.”
In 1933, the Civilian Conservation Corps started clearing the Wildcat trail, one of the first ski racing trails built in the United States. Twenty-five years later, on January 25th 1958, Wildcat Mountain opened for lift-serviced skiing with The Wildcat Gondola and a single T-bar surface lift. Wildcat's trademark for many years, the Wildcat Gondola was the first lift of this type in the U.S. to be built. Pat Franchi and his family purchased Wildcat Mountain from original developers in 1986 and made significant capital investments to day lodge facilities, snowmaking, summer attractions, and lifts. In 1997, Pat replaced the original gondola with the Wildcat Express: a high-speed detachable quad chairlift that accesses the greater than 4,000’ summit in just over 6 minutes providing visitors over 2,100 vertical feet of skiing and riding in the winter and is converted in the summer and fall with 4-person enclosed gondola cabins to be the state’s highest scenic gondola. The legacy of Pat Franchi’s stewardship will be that he made improvements to and enabled the ski area to continue operating for more than two decades and support to many charitable foundations including the continued annual Yahoo weekends hosting children and their families from Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Loon Mountain - Lincoln, NH, November 1, 2010: New Hampshire’s Loon Mountain continues its commitment to providing a consistently great guest experience with a capital investment of more than $1.8 million to further enhance its ability to deliver superior snow conditions and great service for 2010-2011. Over the past four years, Loon has invested $18 million in improvements, new lifts and terrain.
Already renowned for delivering great snow conditions, Loon has invested an additional $1.2 million to augment and upgrade its impressive snowmaking system that covers 99% of the trail system. An addition of 428 highly-efficient Low-E HKD tower snow guns, the largest installation of the latest technology in New England, will allow the resort to increase overall snow production by as much as 150%, as well as maximize snow output at a wider range of temperatures. For skiers and riders, this will result in more terrain opening earlier and more snow all season, as well as giving the Resort a better ability to replenish snow and resurface terrain even more quickly when weather conditions are less than ideal.
A new Prinoth “Beast” grooming machine, with 40% more grooming surface and pushing power than a standard machine, will provide state-of-the-art snow surfaces at Loon this winter. The Beast, the first machine of its size in New Hampshire, and one of only several in New England, will allow for more terrain to be groomed better and more efficiently. In addition to providing superior snow surfaces, this will also help the Resort to reduce its fuel consumption.
Loon has also added a seventh tree skiing area comprised of 15 acres located to skiers’ right of Upper Walking Boss. A sixth terrain park also makes its debut this winter: a new natural park with all elements made with materials from the surrounding woods will round out Loon’s quality terrain park offerings for all levels - from the Burton Progression Park all the way up to the signature Loon Mountain Park featuring the biggest jumps and features like the 32-foot-high wall-ride, Shaping Shack Hubba and a 425-foot-long Superpipe.
Loon’s park staff spent the summer revamping the fleet of jibs and creating 20 new features. Fifteen of the 20 jib features include a variety of snowmaking pipe-style rails and wall rides. In addition to these improvements, the parks have added five new jib features with signature designs highlighting park sponsors, including Skull Candy, Neff, Special Blend and Thirty-Two.
A web-based Park Etiquette and Education Program (PEEPs), introduced last season, educates skiers and riders about the right way to enjoy Loon’s parks.
Loon’s newest exhilarating adventure debuted this summer: a new zipline delivers high-flying thrills as guests soar above the Pemigewasset River. Beginning at Loon’s Adventure Center, guests experience a thrilling adrenaline rush as they fly across the River and back again. The zipline at Loon is only open during the summer and fall months.
