I had eaten at a wonderful Italian place about 14 years ago in Portsmouth, NH. When I was there is was night, and I was with a group of people and never paid much attention to the name of this wonderful establishment. Well, since that time when I visited Portsmouth I had been looking for that fabulous "Italian place" of my memory. Then low and behold I mentioned on our last trip to Portsmouth that I wondered it the fabulous "Italian place" still existed. Well next thing you know I was taken to that "Italian place". The correct name....The Rosa. The Rosa Restaurant, A Portsmouth Landmark Since 1927, on 80 State Street serves fine Italian cuisine and Seafood with a focus on traditional Italian fare of parmigiana, pizza, veal, and pasta.
I was delightfully excited as we were escorted to a booth. I remembered this place and the fantastic food that had been served many years ago. I was not disappointed in the food that we ordered this trip. First wonderful crusty bread, a garden fresh salad with house dressing and then ...Veal Picatta, veal sauteed in olive oil with garlic, basil, shallots, capers, lemon juice, white wine, parsley and stock served with pasta, and Baked Cannelloni Florentine; chicken and spinach with Italian cheeses wrapped in pasta and topped with homemade marinara sauce. By far some of the best Italian food I have ever eaten, and we all know that Italian food is my first choice and specialty.
Dessert, since I cleaned my plate was "just" a cannolli. Somehow at The Rosa nothing is "just". It was wonderful, every last bite. The prices at The Rosa are reasonable for downtown Portsmouth. The quality of the food, award winning. The wine list is extensive, and the service impeccable. Over all I give this four and three quarters stars out of five.
