Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway
Franconia Notch State Park NH State Parks
|
The Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway's purpose is to bring visitors year round to the summit of this 4,100'+ mountain. In the winter the main purpose of this is so that they can then ski down Cannon Mountain. The Aerial Tramway however makes it a spectacular ride to the top with beautiful views of Franconia Notch in 360 degrees. It's no wonder that people come all year round. When visitors reach the summit there are amenities and things to do such as walking paths, an observation deck, cafeteria, and restrooms.
The first aerial tramway in North America was built on Cannon Mountain in 1938 providing lift service to its visitors. In 1980 a new tram was built with three times the capacity at 140 people. This is split between two cabins that hold 70 people each. The vertical ascent of this new tram is just over 2,000 feet. One of the old cabins is currently being used as the entrance for the New England Ski Museum, which is located in Franconia Notch State Park.
