The Cog Railway was the brainchild of Campton NH native Sylvester March. It was Marsh and Franklin, NH father - son inventors Herrick and Walter Aiken who constructed the worlds first mountain climbing railway in the late 1800's. The first Cog Railway, called "Old Peppersass" climbed the 6,288 foot Mount Washington on July 3, 1869.
Today, the Cog is still chugging. Bringing visitors and sightseers to the summit of New Hampshire’s highest peak. The 3 million dollar expansion will mean a quicker and safer ride, allowing visitors more time to spend at the summit. The top of Mount Washington features historical sites, such as the old Tip Top House and the weather display at the Mt. Washington Observatory.
Fuel economy will also be improved, some of the locomotives will be converted from coal to oil firing engines, resulting in better fuel economy. The Mt. Washington Cog Railway celebrates its 135th anniversary this summer (2004). Plan a special visit to this remarkable technological achievement.
